Small mammal with red fur and white belly. The average size of this small rodent is a total length of 28 to 35 cm, tail of 9.5 to 15 cm and weighs 140 to 250 g (Male). To detect its presence, a pile of shredded cones and seeds on the ground; gnawed tubing in maple groves; contents of feeders pillaged. Its alarm call is characteristic, the red squirrel is territorial and loudly manifests its presence. It feeds on conifer cones, acorns, seeds, hazelnuts, buds, flowers and mushrooms. In spring, it eats the buds swollen with sap and tears off the bark to lick the sap that flows from it. , with a predilection for maple. It also does not disdain insects, bird eggs, baby birds, mice and even young rabbits. It also finds seeds at bird feeding stations. Parturition takes place between April and May. The female has one litter per year, of five babies on average. The duration of gestation is approximately 40 days. It is breeding in March.
 
HABITAT
City, countryside, forest, fields.
The red squirrel's preferred habitat is in softwood and mixedwood stands. 
It occupies a home range of 2 to 8 hectares.
