PILEATED WOODPECKER

The Pileated Woodpecker is the largest of the woodpeckers. It stands out from everyone by its size and its bright red crest. The neck and head are striped black and white. The body is entirely black and the sides are striped. The male is distinguished from the female by his red crest which begins at the base of the beak and by his red mustache. Length of 44 cm and wingspan of 70 cm. The pileated woodpecker occupies several habitats, deciduous, coniferous or mixed forests. Both in town and in the countryside, the Pileated Woodpecker likes large trees and regenerating forests of at least 5 years. It nests from April to June and lays 2 to 4 eggs. Incubation lasts approximately 26 days and the young will remain in the nest for 26 to 28 days.

The staple diet is carpenter ants. It is supplemented by wood-eating beetle larvae, termites and caterpillars. The importance of fruits (cherry, dogwood fruit, wild grape) berries (holly, poison ivy, hackberry). He regularly visits our feeders.
