Tree Swallow and Eastern Bluebird Nest Box

This small bird particularly appreciates open habitats, both in the city and in the countryside, where it can easily capture insects in flight. It consumes a phenomenal quantity, often hunting in groups. The Tree Swallow migrates south before November and returns in March. It nests from May to July and lays 3 to 7 eggs, incubated by the female for 13 to 16 days. The chicks will make their first flight approximately 18 to 22 days after hatching.

This small bird has become very rare with the loss of its nesting sites and the intense competition against the House Sparrow and the European Starling. However, installing nest boxes seems to be able to make a difference. The Eastern Bluebird nests in agricultural environments, open with small shrubs, pastures, fallow fields, golf courses and orchards. The Eastern Bluebird migrates south before November and returns between March and April. It nests from April to August and lays 4 to 5 eggs, incubated by the female for 13 to 15 days. The chicks will make their first flight approximately 17 to 18 days after hatching.

The Eastern Bluebird primarily consumes insects, but it enjoys berries and fruits and will be attracted to fruit trees and shrubs. Once a nesting site is chosen, it can return there year after year. The Tree Swallow often competes for nest boxes, so it is better to install two nest boxes in the same environment to avoid clashes.
